House of Wong - the Warren Wong Legacy
Warren Wong immigrated to Canada in 1917 at the age of 14, following his father who had already established residency in Montreal. In his early years, Warren worked as a house-keeper for a Vice President of Sun Life Canada. Later, Warren established a business in Montreal with eventual migration to Nova Scotia where he first established a business presence in Halifax. As Warren learned of an expanding community down Digby way, he decided to move to Digby and in 1944 he set up a restaurant named the Cornwallis Cafe.
The restaurant name was inspired and motivated by the nearby Cornwallis military training base with expectations of a thriving clientele of recruits from the military base as well as fishermen from the local fishing industry.
When Warren retired from the restaurant business, he handed his ownership to his son George Soon Wong who, along with other business partners, went on to establish the House of Wong in 1974. In the latter years of ownership, it was a two-way partnership between Soon Wong and Ivan Wong who are friends since childhood. Ivan provided significant contribution to the management and operation of the House of Wong especially in the latter stages of the ownership.
The House of Wong restaurant is located in Digby, Nova Scotia, Canada.
