Comparing Smartphone App Stores

Here are some interesting observations on Google Play versus the Apple App Store from the standpoint of a free app.

Buy Books at Barnes&Noble is available on Google Play and the Apple App Store.
*** Dec/2012: This app is no longer available. ***

Android app on Google Play       iOS app on the App Store

It is worth pointing out that I have not paid for any advertising to promote my free app. Any and all mention has been through social media and pages on my websites along with access from search engines.

The app was made available Jan 10th, 2012 on Google Play. After 6 months, it has been downloaded and installed 92 times with 31 actively installed devices using the app. Google provides stats for the distinction between "tried" and "kept" app installations. These stats are rather disappointing and I thought the low attraction reflected non-interest.

The app was made available June 4th, 2012 on the Apple App Store. After 3 weeks, it has been downloaded and installed 1093 times. These stats are encouraging and tells me that Apple does a far better job at making apps visible to users.

It will be interesting to see the attraction of a paid app in the app marketplaces.
