Toshiba Hard Disk Drive
In my December/2015 Hard Disk Capacity blog page, I wrote about re-using a Western Digital Blue 500GB hard disk to add to my computer to accommodate my video files.
Since then, I have been keeping a lookout on hard disk prices. Western Digital, with its brand recognition and high reliability record, is undoubtedly desirable to have. However, it comes at a steep price premium. I want to add 3TB of disk capacity to my system. The WD Black WD3003FZEX 3TB disk is around $240 CAD. Seagate has been off my list due to overwhelming reports of its dismal reliability. Toshiba apparently has decent reliability and they are trying to compete with lower pricing. I had been watching the price of the Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB hard disk since before Christmas 2015. At that time, it was priced at $110 CAD.
It is necessary to research the reliability record of specific hard disk models, not just the manufacturer per se. Based on various user assessments including reliability statistics published by Backblaze, an online backup service provider, the Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB hard disk fares quite well.
Today, I purchased the Toshiba DT01ACA300 3TB hard disk from NCIX for $120 CAD. It took about an hour to install the hardware into my computer. There was re-routing of power cords and connectors along with SATA connections. I suppose I could have video recorded my hardware installation - but I'm not redoing it just to make a video!
The Toshiba 3TB hard disk was installed in the HDD bay marked by the arrow.
I now have an extra 3TB of disk capacity to fill with my video files. Let the video recording roll.
