Google is closing the gap on smartphone apps
As can be seen in the Android Mindshare and Penetration page, there is developer mindshare shifting towards Google's Android as a leading mobile platform. Here is a chart showing the number of apps available for the leading smartphones. Google is closing the gap but has work remaining to overtake Apple.
Apple's 350,000 apps is a significant lead over Google's 250,000 apps but it will be telling over the next few months as apps are rolled out on the Android platform. It is not a question of if but when the equalization event will happen.
The number of apps does not define the market leader - smartphone sales does. See the Smartphone Market Share page.
In a related story on the fight in the tablet computer market, look at the how Android tablet computers can beat the iPad page. Price is the number 1 factor that will propel Android powered tablets to success and if Apple's traditional premium pricing remains, it will make it easier for competitors to leverage the price factor to their advantage.
